US hopes to name Qatar as major, non-NATO ally

The United States hopes to name Qatar as a major, non-NATO ally. This was stated by the US deputy assistant secretary of state for Gulf affairs while talking to newsmen in Washington. The announcement follows a meeting between the senior US and Qatari officials in Washington earlier this week. The non-NATO ally status provides countries with preferential access to US military equipment and technology and benefits in defence trade and security cooperation.
