Myanmar's military has taken control of the country after detaining de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi and other politicians. According to reports, a state of emergency had been declared for one year and power transferred. The coup comes after tensions rose between the civilian government and the military following a disputed election.
Meanwhile, the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has strongly condemned Myanmar’s military take over. In a statement, Secretary-General expressed his grave concern regarding the declaration of transfer of all legislative, executive, and judicial powers to the military terming it a serious blow to democratic reforms in Myanmar.
According to Media, Aung San Suu Kyi's international standing was badly damaged after she turned a blind eye to the massacre of Rohingya Muslims in Rakhine state, and did nothing to stop the 2017 army operations against them. As a result, thousands of Rohingya Muslims fled to take refuge in neighboring Bangladesh.
