Nationwide strike in Myanmar as anti-coup campaign intensifies

In Myanmar, the biggest trade unions have begun a widespread strike in the latest attempt to pressure the Army to reverse the February 1 coup. At least 18 labor organizations representing industries including construction, agriculture, and manufacturing have called on workers to stop work to restore Aung San Suu Kyi’s government to power. Witnesses have told the media that troops have fired shots in the air at several places around the country and are checking cars in central Yangon to prevent protesters from gathering.
