UN Chief appoints personal envoy to Afghanistan

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has appointed veteran French diplomat Jean Arnault his personal envoy to Afghanistan. The appointment came a day before the meeting of the negotiators of Russia, China, the United States, Pakistan, a delegation of top Afghan officials, and opposition leaders in Moscow, in an attempt to start peace talks. UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric told the press that Jean Arnault is assigned to assist in the achievement of a political solution to the conflict by working closely with the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan.
