Japan may use anti-influenza drug Avigan against coronavirus

The Japanese government will consider using anti-influenza Avigan tablets for treating people infected with the new coronavirus, health minister Katsunobu Kato said in a television program on Saturday. As there is no medication for the virus at present, Avigan is expected to be administered on infected patients if its effects are confirmed. “Of medications that have been used to treat influenza, some may be useful” for the treatment of the new viral disease, Kato said. If Avigan and other influenza drugs turn out to be effective, “We hope to use them immediately,” the minister said.
