US vows to facilitate prisoner exchange as agreed in peace deal with Taliban

The United States has expressed the commitment to facilitate prisoner exchange as agreed in the peace deal with the Taliban. In a series of tweets, US Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad said we will support each side to release significant numbers.

The US envoy warned that increasing violence is a threat to the peace agreement and must be reduced immediately. Zalmay Khalilzad said we must act on all fronts to clear the road of obstacles that slow our progress towards intra afghan negotiations. He called on the Afghans to rise to the occasion, put country first and not to lose this historic opportunity.

The US envoy said that he also met Taliban leader Mullah Berader and his team last night. He said both the sides have agreed that the purpose of the US-Taliban agreement is to pave the path to a comprehensive peace in Afghanistan. He said in addition to discussing the need to decrease violence, we also talked about the exchange of prisoners.
